About Remains:
My main and initial idea, based on the theme of “Remains”, was to investigate the issue of pollution through littering, throughout Guernsey as a whole. My understanding of the term “Remains” was linked to our consumer society and the manmade items that are discarded by people and end up as litter in our environment.
I initially considered photographing Guernsey’s landfill site and recycling centres as well as documenting general litter around the island.
After further consideration, I recognised that this was too wide an area to cover and so decided to narrow my investigation to the issue of pollution along Guernsey’s coastline, as marine and costal pollution is currently such a “hot topic” globally. This is also a topic I feel passionately about, as I love the sea and am concerned for the future of the coastal and marine environment. I personally feel that many people do not recognise that this problem exists to a large extent on our small island and instead believe that it is a problem faced mostly by other parts of the world.
Guernsey has the ocean on its doorstep and is renowned for its natural beauty. Many of the photographs of the island celebrate this natural beauty.
In essence, my aim with this project is to challenge people’s idyllic view of our island and document the fact that we are not immune to the growing problem of the remains of plastic and other types of litter polluting our environment, particularly our coastal biosphere.
